ABC News has reported that asbestos material has been found at the Queensland State Government’s new Executive Building in William St, Brisbane. The asbestos was contained in metal skirting which had been imported from China. Work was stopped until the asbestos had been safely removed & the site cleared. This is a perfect example of why cheaper, imported materials can actually cost a lot more in the long run. Australia is one of approximately 50 countries which have recognised the health dangers associated with asbestos & have banned it’s use. China, Russia, even Canada & the USA still use asbestos in manufacturing & imports from these countries can pose a health risk if they contain asbestos. Caution must be used when working with imported materials that are not certified as asbestos free.
